On a big block the house is the easy part. The gate, the long driveway and the sheds out the back are where a camera system has to work hardest.
The southern and western parts of Logan City are largely acreage. Greenbank, New Beith, Munruben, Jimboomba, Chambers Flat, Logan Village, Cedar Creek, Cedar Grove and Mundoolun all have plenty of blocks from one to twenty acres, and Carbrook in the north east has its own pocket. Some are treed and hilly, some are open paddocks, and most have at least one shed well away from the house.
Network cable carries power and video reliably for about 100 metres. Inside a suburban house that never matters. On acreage it shapes the whole design.
Anything within 100 metres of the recorder can be wired directly, with the cable in conduit, buried or run along a fence. Past that, the options are a PoE extender partway along, fibre optic cable between buildings, or a point to point wireless link. Wireless links are quick to set up and work well over long distances, but they need clear line of sight. A row of gum trees between the house and the shed can rule them out, which is why we check on site.
If you only had one camera on acreage, it would be at the gate. Every vehicle passes it. Two cameras usually go there: one aimed narrowly at the spot where cars stop or slow, set up to read plates even with headlights on, and one wider camera showing the whole vehicle and anyone walking in.
Power at the gate is the next question. If there is no power, a cable or wireless link from the nearest building can carry it, or a solar powered camera with its own 4G connection can sit there independently.
The bush is busy at night. Kangaroos, wallabies, foxes, hares and the neighbour’s horse will set off basic motion sensors constantly. Cameras with person and vehicle detection on board filter that out, so an alert from the gate at 1am is worth getting up for.
Some acreage in Logan has fixed wireless NBN, some has Starlink and some has patchy mobile only. Recording does not depend on any of it, because footage stays on the recorder at the house. For remote viewing we set the app to use a smaller stream when you are away, so it loads on whatever connection you have.
No. The cameras record to the recorder at the house. Internet is only needed to watch from your phone when you are away.
Long cable runs across open ground can pick up surges from nearby strikes. Surge protectors on outdoor runs, or fibre between buildings, reduce the risk.
Yes. With vehicle detection on the gate camera, you get a phone alert when a car pulls up, day or night.
