Four to six wired 4K cameras, cabling kept inside the roof and walls, a recorder in a cupboard and the app on every phone in the house.
Most houses start with four cameras, and that is what our base package covers. For $1,690 installed you get four 4K turret cameras, a four channel 4K recorder with the PoE built in, a 2TB WD Purple surveillance drive, the Cat6 cabling through the roof space, and the app set up on everyone’s phone. The cameras record around the clock to the drive in your house, so there are no cloud fees. Equipment is under warranty for three years and the workmanship for five.
The four positions are nearly always the same: the driveway and front of the property, the front door, the side gate, and the back yard. From there, extra cameras get added for the things specific to your place.
A big part of Logan’s housing is single storey brick and tile from the 1970s and 80s, especially through Kingston, Woodridge, Slacks Creek, Marsden and Springwood. They are good houses to cable. The roof space is usually roomy enough to crawl through, and the cable comes out under the eaves at each corner and drops straight to the camera. The recorder goes in a linen press or the garage, close to the modem.
Carports and garages are worth thinking about on these homes. If the car lives under a carport beside the house, it often needs its own camera, because the driveway camera sees the front of the car but not the doors.
Daisy Hill, Shailer Park, Cornubia and parts of Springwood are built on hills, and split level homes are common. The challenge is getting cable from the roof over one level down to cameras on the lower level, which might have its own entry, garage or rumpus room door. We plan the route on site, often using a cupboard, a wall cavity or the space between floors, so cable never runs down the outside brickwork.
Split levels often need a fifth camera for that lower entry. It is the door nobody can see from upstairs.
Newer homes in Park Ridge, Logan Reserve, Yarrabilba and Flagstone have low roof pitches, narrow eaves and roof spaces full of insulation and ducting. They can be cabled, but it takes planning, and sometimes a camera position shifts slightly to land where the cable can reach. If your home is still being built, a pre-wire at frame stage is the easier option.
Before drilling, each camera position is tested with a live picture on a phone, so you can see exactly what it will cover. Once it is dark, the night picture is checked and adjusted. The app goes on each phone with alert zones set to the parts of the yard that matter, and you are shown how to find and save a recording.
With four 4K cameras recording continuously to the 2TB drive in our package, expect roughly one to three weeks, depending on the compression settings and how busy each scene is. A bigger drive keeps more.
Not without power. A small UPS on the recorder keeps the system running through short outages and protects it from the power coming back on with a surge.
