Building sites are full of tools and materials and empty every night. Cameras with after-hours alerts turn a site from easy pickings into a risk.
A building site at night is everything a thief wants: valuable items, no one around and easy access through a temporary fence. Tools, generators, copper, hot water systems, appliances, timber and even whole pallets of tiles go missing. The fit-out stage, when appliances and fittings are in a house that nobody lives in yet, is usually the most exposed.
Sites with builder’s temporary power can run a small recorder in a locked box or the site shed, with wired cameras around the site and a 4G router for remote access. You get round the clock recording plus live view on your phone.
Sites with no power use solar powered cameras with built-in 4G. They record when they detect a person or vehicle and send an alert straight to your phone. They do not record continuously, but they work anywhere with mobile coverage.
Large parts of Logan are under construction, particularly in Yarrabilba, Flagstone, Park Ridge and Bahrs Scrub. On a street with twenty houses going up at once, utes and trucks come and go all day and nobody pays attention to one more. That makes it easy for someone to walk off with materials in daylight, too. A camera covering the driveway and the garage records who came and went, and when.
What needs watching changes over a build. At slab and frame stage, the priority is the materials stack, the skip and the site shed. At lock-up, it shifts to the doors, the garage and wherever appliances are stored. Cameras get moved at the key stages, and the quote says how many visits that includes.
Builders running several sites can view them all in one app and share live access with site supervisors. Owner builders can plan ahead: the cabling for the finished home’s permanent system can go in at frame stage, and the site camera is replaced with the permanent system at handover. Our new build page explains how the pre-wire works.
A solar 4G camera can go up in a few hours. A wired system on temporary power takes longer, depending on the number of cameras.
Solar 4G cameras move easily between sites. Wired systems can be moved too, with some cable left behind.
A sign saying the site is under video surveillance is a cheap deterrent and is good practice, especially where workers are on site.
